Common Foot Surgeries

There are several foot conditions that often require surgery. These common foot surgeries are relatively minor and usually have a simple recovery period.

Toe Surgeries

Bone Spur

Bone spurs are extraneous growths at a joint. Surgery includes small incisions to reach the spur and then shaving or cutting off the excess bone. These procedures are typically quick with minimal recovery, depending on the size and location of the spur.

Bunions

A bony growth at the base of the big toe is a bunion. Bunions are typically treated with well-fitting shoes, over-the-counter medications, and cushioning pads. However, if a bunion is causing extreme pain and difficulty walking, your podiatrist may recommend bunion surgery to remove the extra part of the bone. This surgery can be painful and requires several days of keeping your foot elevated and then several weeks of non- to limited-weight-bearing activities.

Hammertoe

A bunion left untreated can cause the big toe to bend inward. This is known as a hammertoe. Surgery is often recommended to correct the joint and straighten the toe. After the joint has been repaired, most recoveries last about 6 weeks.

Sole Surgeries

Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a tough ligament that runs across the base of the foot. Extended exercise, without proper stretching, can cause it to become inflamed and painful. Surgery of the plantar fascia can help to reduce stress and inflammation to decrease pain. After surgery, expect to remain off your feet for several weeks to allow the fascia time to heal.

Tibialis Posterior Dysfunction

The tibialis posterior is a tendon in the sole of the foot. It too can become inflamed and painful. Surgery may be required if rest and ice are not helping the inflammation to subside. A tendon tear almost always requires surgical repair.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma is a nerve condition affecting the ball of the foot. Patients typically describe feeling like their sock is bunched up or there are small pebbles in their shoe. It can be quite painful or numb in the affected area. Surgery can help by relieving pressure on the nerve or even removing the nerve entirely.

Other Common Foot Surgeries

Arthritis

Arthritis can occur in any joint in the foot as the cartilage surrounding the joint begins to wear down the bones become irritated and inflammation sets in. Surgery to remove the damaged tissue and insert a synthetic joint can remove the source of this pain and help to prevent further degeneration.

Fracture

Some foot fractures will require surgery to ensure that the bones heal properly. Your doctor will make this decision based on x-rays and other imaging. If your foot fracture needs surgery, recovery will depend on the extent of the break. For more extensive breaks, your doctor may insert metal rods or screws to hold the bones in place.
