What Is Sever’s Disease?

It can be scary when children are in pain, and Sever’s disease, which tends to occur in children between eight and 14 years old, could be the cause of your child’s foot pain. While this condition generally resolves on its own, if you are concerned about anything, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a podiatrist. Best Foot Doctor in New York City (NYC) has experienced staff that will help you and your child feel safe and comfortable.

What Does Sever’s Disease Feel Like?

Children who develop Sever’s disease commonly feel pain in the heels of their feet. The disease causes the Achilles tendon to pull on the growth plate, causing pain and discomfort. While the disease can come and go, it often does resolve on its own.

If your child has Sever’s disease, they may experience one or more of the following four symptoms:

  1. Pain in one or both heels that often comes and goes
  2. Pain that increases with physical activity, especially if it is unusually strenuous or a new type of activity
  3. You may find that your child limps or walks on their toes to prevent pain
  4. Pain from Sever’s disease is often worse when first waking up

If this heel pain is giving your child trouble and preventing them from enjoying normal daily activities, there are a few things you can do.

Treatment for Sever’s Disease

In most cases, Sever’s disease will resolve on its own over time. To help children deal with the pain and reduce suffering, there are five treatments that you can do to help.

  1. Rest – because physical activity increases this type of heel pain, resting can help. Limit activities and rest often.
  2. Ice – apply an ice pack to the sore area for 15-20 minutes at a time. Wrapping the ice in a tea towel or similar thin cloth can help prevent damage to the skin from extreme cold.
  3. Over-the-counter pain medication – giving your child appropriate doses of pain medication can help relieve pain and inflammation. Make sure to only give children the appropriate amount of medication based on their age, height, and weight.
  4. Correct footwear – resist the urge to go barefoot if you have Sever’s disease. Supportive shoes and inserts can help relieve pain and discomfort.
  5. Perform simple stretches to stretch the calves and heel muscles. These can be safely done several times a day.
